The Best Ever Ribbon Holder - DIY and so easy to make!

Do you love the variety of ribbons available at Hobby Lobby as much as I do?  I have collected loads of spools because it seems that they are constantly on sale and who can resist that? Plus they coordinate with their fabric prints making it ideal for so many projects. I bought a ribbon spool holder and mounted it to my wall only to find out that the majority of the spools were too big to fit. Bummer!

So I wandered around Walmart, Hobby Lobby, and Target and then wandered through them all again searching.  What would be super simple, ridiculously easy, and readily available?  I found it, in the curtain aisle at Walmart.
There is a 2 pack of cafe' rods for under $2. The come with mounting plates for each end of the rod. The rods clip onto mounting hardware making them easily removable. I would be able to have access to switch out my old spools for new ones. Perfect!

Next I went back to Hobby Lobby and purchase the 2 wooden, pre-painted trays I had seen on sale for 50% off for a total of $30 for the pair. Perfect, I won't have to spend money on paint or wait for it to dry, and lets be honest, there were so cute, they were begging to be bought.

You could use a shallow crate, shadow box frame or other shallow box instead of the tray, but the tray was the first item I found that had the right dimension.  With whatever you pick, just be sure what you use is as deep as the radius (half of the width of the circle) so your spools can fit and still be able to rotate.

The trick to marking the spots for the mounting plates is most easily explained by the picture below. First you will mark the halfway  point. Then line up your largest ribbon spools on a rod and mark  the outer edge dimension of the spool on the frame. Using that mark, find the halfway point from there to the end. That is where you will mount your other hardware.  Repeat on the other end.  (As you can see from the picture, this is information I figured out after the fact, but thankfully it still worked out ok.:)

Depending on the size of you tray, frame, or box you may want to have more or less rods.

The last thing is to  put some wall hanging hardware on that back. I opted for the eye screws and wire. The Masonite was too dense to use the claw foot wall mount nails.

A few helpful notes:
- Make sure to mark and pre-drill your holes. The drill bit should be just a hair smaller that your screws, taking into consideration the screw threads.
- Using a small piece of tape, mark the depth of the screw on the drill bit. That way you don't drill father than you need to, risking a blow out on the side wall.
- If your screws are having a difficult time going in or your wood is cracking, you didn't make your pilot holes (pre-drilled holes) wide enough or you over tightened your screws.
