Bedroom Makeover

My husband travels occasionally for work overseas and since overseas trips tend to be longer in length I love to have a project to keep me company while he is gone.

We have lived in the house for a year and a half and I have decorated the family room and living room, but hadn't made it around to finishing the master bedroom. I had tried buying things here and there to style up our room, but so far it really hadn't come together for me. It started to drive me crazy.
PROBLEMS TO REMEDY:
The low platform bed was bad from the beginning.  The frame was too big for the mattress which led to many injuries such as gouging my ankle and denting my shin. (My depth perception isn't always at its best.)
I had just recently purchase the night stands a few months ago from IKEA (when my hubs was on his last trip) and before that we had a mis-match of nightstands, one of which was constructed from those wire cub cubbies.  So the matching night stands were a welcome addition after 9 years of making do with what we had.

When my husband asked what my plans were while he was gone I nonchalantly replied that I didn't have any (and he did believe me for a minute because I am a terrible liar :). The second he was out the door I got to work.  First up was ordering box spring mattresses.  I made the bed foundation process way harder than it needed to be. I ordered 9" box springs and once I had them put on the platform foundation I just laughed and laughed...my bed was a safety hazard and looked ridiculously tall. So, I ended up purchasing the metal rails ($40 I hadn't planned on spending) which worked out nicely because it brought it down to the perfect height and as an added bonus I no longer stub my toes.

Master Bedroom Gray Blue Yellow Color Palette 1HEADBOARD:
I made the head board out of ply wood and framed out the mattress foam with 2x4's. ( You can find large foam mattresses for $20 a piece from Home Depot). One I covered it with batting and cotton twill canvas, I finished it off with a nail head detail. Since I didn't have another adult around it was laughable when I attempted to move the head board from the family room floor, up the stairs, to my bedroom....some how I did it. Hanging it on the wall was another super human feat, but some how managed with out injury or dents in the wall. I used metal wall hanging cleats (can be found in the picture hanging isle at Home Depot) to attached the headboard to the wall.  I like how the headboard perfectly aligns with the window above it.

WINDOW TREATMENTS:
I picked up drapes and that great curtain hardware at IKEA. They were only $25 for two panels and they are nice and long. The finials were my favorite. They are glass globes wrapped in wire and break up all the white and gray in the room. I felt like brushed nickel would blend in too much.
READING NOOK:
I purchased this amazing chair from Target along with the wooded sculptural side table. I made the small pillow with fabric purchased from Hobby Lobby.

RUG AND BENCH:
The rug was also purchased from Target for $70 (a real steal for an 8x5 rug).  The bench was covered with a throw from Target. (I love the chunky weave of the fabric).  I will post about the bench separately.

FINAL REVEAL:
I thought I was pretty smart and tricky surprising my husband with a new master bedroom retreat (and he really was grateful), but I had overlooked one important detail....all the pictures I took were instantly uploaded from my phone to dropbox and thus to his computer....so he knew I was up to something. Luckily the room finished coming together while he was on his 17+ hour flight home. So even though he knew I was up to something the finished product was truly and surprise and has become a relaxing haven.
